Your Caravan Is a Target When It's Parked at Home — Here's the Fix
A caravan or boat parked in a driveway or on the street is, from a thief's perspective, an obviously valuable, clearly identifiable, and often poorly secured target. It's outdoors, it's visible from the road, it's unattended for long stretches, and — unlike a car — it's rarely fitted with the kind of alarm or immobiliser system that makes a quick theft difficult.

Why home parking is a security weak point
- Visibility. A caravan is hard to hide and easy to case from the street.
- Low deterrence. Most home security setups (alarms, cameras, armed response) are built around the house, not a trailer parked outside it.
- Extended exposure. Between trips, a caravan can sit untouched — and unmonitored — for weeks or months at a time.
- Component and contents theft. Even where the whole unit isn't stolen, wheels, batteries, gas bottles, and fittings are common targets.
- Insurance conditions. Some insurers reduce cover or increase premiums for caravans and boats without secure, off-street storage — and may query claims where storage arrangements don't meet policy conditions.
What proper storage security looks like
- Perimeter fencing around the entire yard, not just individual bays.
- Access control, so only registered account holders can get in and out.
- On-site presence/security, rather than a caravan sitting alone and unwatched.
- Documented, professional storage — the kind of arrangement insurers recognise, versus "parked at a friend's place."
The practical benefit
Beyond preventing theft outright, secure storage removes the low-level anxiety of an expensive asset sitting exposed for most of the year — and can support better terms with your insurer, since off-street, access-controlled storage is generally viewed more favourably than street or open driveway parking.
