Hail Season and Your Caravan: What Actually Protects the Roof

Caravan owners tend to think about weather in terms of rain and sun. Hail gets far less attention —
until a single storm leaves a roof covered in dents that weren’t there the day before.

How hail damage actually happens

A caravan roof panel isn’t a solid, rigid sheet — it flexes slightly under impact.

A hailstone striking at speed can dent that panel permanently, and enough impacts across a storm can leave a roof looking like it’s been through a hailstorm even when the rest of the caravan is untouched.

Boat hulls and canopies face a similar risk — gelcoat is hard but brittle, and a serious hailstorm can crack or chip it in ways that are expensive to repair properly.

This isn’t rare. KZN and the Free State both see genuinely severe hail seasons, and a single bad storm can cause damage running into the thousands of rands — cosmetic in the mildest cases, structural in the worst.

Reading a hail warning like it actually matters

The South African Weather Service issues hail warnings the same way it does for heavy rain or wind — but caravan and boat owners often don’t think to check them, because a caravan sitting at home doesn’t feel like something “at risk” the way, say, an outdoor event might.

If you’ve got a caravan or boat parked outside and a severe thunderstorm warning comes through for your area, it’s worth treating it as seriously as you would for your car.

What actually helps

  • Undercover parking, where available — the single most effective protection, since it removes direct exposure entirely rather than trying to absorb the impact.
  • Purpose-made hail nets or covers, if undercover parking isn’t an option — not perfect, but genuinely reduce impact severity.
  • Checking your insurance policy’s hail damage terms before you need them, not after — some policies have specific conditions around parking/storage that affect a hail claim.
  • A quick post-storm inspection, even if nothing looks obviously wrong — small dents and gelcoat cracks aren’t always visible from a glance, especially on a white roof in flat light

The uncomfortable truth about caravan and boat hail damage

Unlike a lot of caravan maintenance issues, there’s genuinely nothing you can do in the moment once a storm has started — the only real protection is where the caravan or boat is parked before the storm arrives.

That makes this one of the few caravan risks where prevention isn’t just better than the fix, it’s the only real option.
